West west palm beach Palm supports idea to ban plastic bags - wptv.com
Show Caption Next West Palm Beach city commissioners support the idea of banning plastic shopping bags. The city says plastic bags are endangering the environment since the bags don't fully degrade in the ocean or on land. Diane Buhler, the founder of Friends of Palm Beach, showed the effects first hand. Buhler walked along the Intracoastal Waterway on Tuesday to illustrate how plastic bags get stuck in trees and can be found deep beneath the surface. Buhler says people need to stop using plastic bags all together. "People assume when the put it in the (recycle) bin, that it's actually getting handled. But the plastic bag is the lightest thing that falls off the truck or flies out of a trash can. You can see them everywhere." The vote isn't binding. It does show that West Palm Beach supports the right for cities to choose whether plastic bags can be used at grocery stores and retail shops. Right now state law doesn't allow cities to pass such a ban.

Law enforcement vehicles crash in Carlsbad pursuit | SanDiegoUnionTribune.com
5, 2016 | Updated, 11:29 p.m. - A stolen truck pursuit Monday that caused a sheriffs and a Carlsbad police car to crash ended when the truck struck the center median on state Route 78, officials said. Sheriffs deputies saw two men, 32 and 24, who had outstanding arrest warrants leave a room at a Ramada Inn on Macadamia Drive in Carlsbad about 8:30 p.m, sheriffs officials said. The suspects and a 22-year-old woman got into the stolen silver truck, Sgt. Arnold Aldana said. When sheriffs deputies stopped the truck at the Poinsettia Lane on-ramp to south Interstate 5, the older man attempted to run away, but deputies were able to arrest him. The younger man and woman drove away south on Interstate 5 through Carlsbad and Encinitas, and began throwing what was later identified as counterfeit bills, printers and computers out of the truck, sheriffs officials said. The truck then continued east on state Route 76. Carlsbad and Oceanside police officers also joined in the chase. East of Canyon Drive, a sheriffs and a Carlsbad police officers vehicle crashed into another drivers car, Aldana said. No one was injured, and the officer and deputy sheriff were taken to a hospital as a precaution, officials said.
